Integrated amplifiers

An integrated amplifier combines a preamplifier and a power amplifier in one box, providing source selection, volume control and power for passive speakers.

What it includes

The preamplifier selects the input and adjusts the listening level. The power amplifier supplies the drive the speakers need. A digital-to-analogue converter (DAC), phono stage or network streaming may also be built in, but none is guaranteed by the name “integrated amplifier”.

What to check

Start with your sources: check that the amplifier has inputs for their outputs. A turntable needs a phono stage suited to its cartridge type, whether inside the turntable, inside the amplifier or in a separate box. A normal line input cannot replace that stage.

Speaker matching

Check the amplifier’s manual for the speaker impedances it supports. When comparing power ratings, match the load impedance, frequency range, distortion limit and number of channels driven. A larger watt figure measured under different conditions is not a fair comparison.
