Streaming DAC

A streaming DAC combines a network music player and a digital-to-analogue converter in one box. It receives music from supported online services or a local library and provides an analogue signal for your amplifier.

This makes it a source component: connect its analogue output to an amplifier’s line input. It can also feed suitable active speakers, with volume control provided by the DAC or elsewhere in the system. Passive speakers still need a power amplifier.

What to check

Music access. Check support for the services, local library and control app you intend to use. Look for Wi-Fi or Ethernet to suit your network.

Connections. Match the analogue outputs to your amplifier. A fixed output leaves listening volume to the amplifier; a variable output can adjust it at the source.

Other sources. Digital inputs let the DAC convert audio from additional equipment. Check the actual input types and supported formats rather than assuming every source will connect.
